If I were the praying type, I'd entreat God for a world where people like Anders Breivik (and his counterparts in other militant far right- and left-wing groups) had no cause to exist.

As for the continuing debt ceiling crisis, I'm scheduled to draw a cartoon for Occasional Religion for the first of August. At this rate, I might have to do two (or three) to anticipate how things turn out.

Did you perchance hear that our *ahem* stalwart ally, Pakistan, is having problems expunging the Taliban in the Swat valley and elsewhere? It's quite sad--Islamabad can't exert itself in the western hinterlands for want of military strength and political will; the inclement geography doesn't help. Anyhow, the latest campaign should prove an interesting spectacle.

Sorry about the rueful dearth of inked and colored cartoons as of late; the Maroon is currently on hiatus, and I'll resume my regular, full-color regimen come winter quarter. In the meantime, allow me to redress the said chromatic exigency while at once offering my opinions on the current FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) bill that, if passed, would grant retroactive immunity to telecommunications firms that aided the NSA's warrant-less wiretapping program at the expense of their customers' privacy.

Roughin' It: Meanwhile...

...human-induced climate instability (let's refrain from employing that horrendous bit of unspeak--"climate change") marches on, engendering untold havoc. If only we could harness politicians' hot air as a source of energy--the mind salivates at the possibilities.
