In my estimation, Georgia gravely miscalculated two things: The strength of Russia's resolve and America's/the West's commitment. As a consequence, their present predicament, however lamentable, is at once not unexpected. Since Georgia has ceded the initiative to Moscow, the question now is how far Russia is willing to go in this dreadful affair.

Words cannot adequately capture how bloody ecstatic I am that this is Our Fearless Leader's last State of the Union speech. The caffeine that courses through my veins where blood once flowed probably also helped.

On a somewhat related note, this is the 100th inked & colored cartoon of 2007-2008. That's 300-500 hrs. of love-filled, caffeine-motivated, and wholly unpaid labor.

I'm still infirm and far from content (a spurious, chimerical concept to begin with, if you ask me), but at least I can pour my misery into my art, passion being one of the three integral virtues of good editorial cartoonists. The other two are a steadfast irreverence of authority and artistic creativity.

Peace in Our Lifetime

I'm really, really depressed right now. Depressed and filled with odium, in fact, and not just because of Bush's arms deal with the Saudis or Mike Huckabee's chicanery.

On a related note, those expecting the Huckabee cartoon will have to wait until Thursday; sorry!

Roughin' It: Annapolis Addendum Addendum

Two persistent and not entirely unrelated onuses, methinks. It's a shame that the parties immediately concerned lack either the will (U.S., Israel, & Syria) or capability (Palestinian Authority) to resolve the issue.

Roughin' It: Iran Follow-Up

It's official--Bush and Ahmadinejad are both flaunting the NIE as affirmations of their policies. "W's" take: "See? That nut's nothin' but trouble! Let's send a couple of carrier groups after the $%&#@*." Ahmadinejad's spin: "Baloney! We're only building civilian reactors now, and, guess what? We responded to diplomacy! Take that, American infidel!" IAEA's perspective: "Ahmadinejad's kinda sorta right" (exact words: "Somewhat vindicated").

Roughin' It: Iran

As I mentioned in an earlier post to-day, the Iranians are apparently not as incorrigible as we had made them out to be. That said, the fact that they were pursuing a nuclear weapons program comes as no great surprise: I'd be stocking up on nukes too if I had hundreds of thousands of U.S. soldiers next door led by a trigger-happy cretin of a commander-in-chief. Of course, let's not forget Cheney and Perle's dire pronouncements on the said country.

Anyhow, the White House's take was predictable, and Our Fearless Leader's trying his hardest to spin this into a dubious new casus belli.

While we're on the topic of Bush's "legacy," let's not forget the storm-cloud of pessimism that hangs over the Annapolis conference. Farewell, Mr. Bush's legacy, we hardly knew ye.

It's been a tough week for Our Fearless Leader. Not only did our Great Friend Mr. Putin ax Russian democracy, but it turns out that diplomacy did win the day in Iran after all.

Adding insult to injury, the Dreaded Chavez, Great Socialist Devil of the Southern Provinces, recently did the unthinkable: Capitulate to public opinion (mainstream media spin: public opinion defeats hated dictator). Well, drats! So much for this whole "democratization" enterprise.
